The cover picture is symbolic. The troubles in marriage result from man’s “divorce” from God. Without the Fall, there would be no end of marriage by death or sin, no divorce, no remarriage. Thankfully, in Christ, marriage is blessed again and can be a part of restoring relationships in a fallen world.

Luck has offered a service to the entire church in this penetrating study of an issue that has become paramount in our contemporary world.  Whether you are part of a church trying to devise a policy, a pastor counseling couples in a troubled marriage, a friend trying to give advice, or even someone experiencing rough waters in their own marriage, this book provides a satisfying vehicle for guiding one to think deeply through the biblical, theological and social issues.  Luck is all-encompassing in his scope, carefully critical in his thinking, and open to fresh ideas in his approach to the text.  His judicious and careful treatment should put this book at the top of anyone’s list for pondering the intricacies of this volatile topic.  Even though not all will agree with all his conclusions, the church needs this book to navigate its way through the modern epidemic of broken families.

As a practicing Christian marriage counselor, I have considered it my duty to become well-informed on sound biblical teaching concerning divorce and remarriage. Of the many books I have read on this subject, Divorce and Remarriage: Recovering the Biblical View, by William Luck stands head and shoulders above the rest. It is comprehensive, and scholarly. The author’s conversational writing style gives me the feeling that I am in an audience at a conference of rabbinical debaters. Besides this, Mr. Luck’s verbal skills equip him to present heavy subject matter in a most enjoyably readable way.

I am very pleased to see this important and neglected work back in print. This seminal work leads to some controversial conclusions (with which I do not always agree) which caused the first edition to be unjustly neglected. Luck delves into corners of Scripture which most scholars neglect, and attempts to find a cohesive view which binds together the Old and New Testaments. His treatment of the Mosaic law of divorce is probably the most comprehensive study outside Jewish writings, and has many novel insights and ideas.
